RBS Six Nations 2012!

It’s that time of the year again – the Six Nations is back!

After the dissapointing world cup campaign from England there is a real need to impress during the first game against Scotland. But, with so many new faces in the squad and the management team, how easy is that going to be?
Probably the best that England can hope for is a narrow defeat with a solid performance from the team – with so little time training together this first game is really about building the team spirit and starting to build a foundation for the rest of the Six Nations and the future (2015 World Cup!).

Watch this space – hopefully the result will be much better than I am predicting…

Codecademy – Great Way of Learning to Code

I came across an article last week (unfortunately I cannot remember where!) that was talking about how the mayor of New York was learning to code!

After reading some more, it appears that a new web site has been set up that has a range of free tutorials on how to code with JavaScript.  The web site is Codecademy.

As a web developer, I was a bit apprehensive at first of how effective it could be but, after registering for free and completing their tutorials, I can say that it is actually a very good site for people who want to start learning how to code -

  • it covers topics including variable declaration, simple mathematics (addition, subtraction, etc), prompts and messages, arrays, if statements, while and do loops, functions and objects.
  • it has a built in console that allows you to type and run your code on the fly
  • it provides help and tips if you get stuck with a particular lesson
  • there appears to be regular updates and mini applications that are added to keep the content fresh.

All in all, it looks like a good place for beginners to start if they want to learn JavaScript.

TiVo Day 4

I have now had the TiVo box for 4 days.  Unfortunately, on Wednesday morning the box decided to start a continuous reboot cycle which resulted in having to turn it off!

Having spoken to the Virgin Media technical support team (who are actually quite good once you get through to the dedicated TiVo support team), the earliest the could send an engineer out was Saturday.  As a result, I have had to temporarily revert to the old V+ HD box.

Once the engineer has been out on Saturday and (hopefully) fixed the issue, I will set it all up again and see how it works for a few days.

First Impressions of the TiVo Box

I managed to get a few hours today to have a play with the new TiVo box.

First impressions are that it is much better than the old V+ HD service from Virgin Media – everything runs quicker and there are some great new features.

One of the best features is the ability to search for programs by actor, director, etc.  I had a look for one of my favourite actors and noticed a new film that I hadn’t seen before.  TiVo informed me that it was being aired at 3am on Saturday and asked if I wanted to record it!

We will have to wait and see how well the suggestions feature works – the “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” buttons have been put to good use tonight!

TiVo Has Arrived!!!

At Last!

The engineer has been out today to install the new Virgin Media TiVo box.  I envisage an evening of playing about and trying to work it all out!

For those who don’t know what it is, check out this link to the Virgin Media TiVo page.

As soon as I have had a chance to play (hopefully tonight!), I will post another article about how the wife and I have found using TiVo.  Until then, check out the link to Virgin Media above to see what it is all about.
